The National Coalition for Literacy is an alliance of the leading national and regional organizations dedicated to advancing adult education, family literacy, and English language acquisition in the United States. Membership is open to all organizations interested in advancing adult education, English language learning and adult and family literacy in U.S.
Through collaborative efforts with other advocacy organizations and individuals, NCL ensures that leaders and legislators at the national level make informed decisions about policies, regulations, and funding for adult education and family literacy. Members meet monthly in a facilitated, virtual policy call to learn about and discuss legislative updates, coordinate on action and messaging, and share ongoing challenges and successes from the field. Members also meet twice a year in person in Washington D.C. to review strategic goals, discuss pressing issues and take collective legislative action. In addition, the National Coalition for Literacy works in collaboration with regional leaders—such as the Maine Adult Education Association (MAEA)—to lead regional symposiums on the value and impact of adult literacy at the local and state level.
Our work is guided by a set of core values:

- Empowerment Foster self-determination and agency through literacy.
