Statement from the National Coalition for Literacy
on Immigration Enforcement and Access to Adult Education

Adult education programs across the United States help adults build literacy, strengthen English language skills, and prepare for work and civic participation. These programs play an essential role in supporting families, strengthening communities, and developing a skilled workforce.

 

In many communities, adult education providers are reporting that recent immigration enforcement activity is affecting learners’ ability to attend and participate in classes. Educators are seeing increased fear and uncertainty among students, as well as disruptions to the stable learning environments that adult education programs work to create.

 

Adult education classrooms depend on trust. Learners must feel safe enough to attend regularly, engage in discussion, and pursue long-term educational goals. When fear keeps learners away from educational programs, opportunities for literacy development, workforce preparation, and civic participation are diminished.

 

Adult education providers remain committed to creating welcoming and supportive learning environments for all learners.
