Raising awareness & informing policy

Our role as a national advocate & info hub

The National Coalition for Literacy (NCL) positions awareness-building at the core of its mission, working to elevate adult education and family literacy as national priorities. As a coalition of leading organizations, NCL brings visibility to the critical role literacy plays not only in individual success, but in the overall health of communities and the economy. Through its messaging and outreach, the organization emphasizes that literacy is foundational to workforce participation, civic engagement, and equitable access to opportunity—helping shift public perception from seeing literacy as an isolated issue to recognizing it as a broad societal concern.

A key component of NCL’s awareness strategy is its role as a national advocate and information hub. By producing fact sheets, research, and policy resources, the coalition ensures that policymakers, educators, and the public understand both the scope of literacy challenges and the urgency of addressing them. NCL works to translate complex data into accessible insights, making the case for increased funding, stronger programs, and more inclusive systems of education. In doing so, it helps build a more informed national dialogue around adult literacy, English language acquisition, and lifelong learning.

NCL also drives awareness through coordinated national initiatives like Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, which serves as a platform to amplify literacy issues across media, communities, and government. These campaigns encourage local organizations and advocates to participate in storytelling, events, and outreach efforts that highlight real-world impacts of literacy programs. By engaging stakeholders at every level – from grassroots providers to federal legislators – NCL expands the reach of its message and reinforces the importance of literacy as a shared responsibility.

Ultimately, NCL’s awareness-building efforts are about more than visibility -they are about action. By raising public consciousness and equipping advocates with tools and resources, the coalition helps mobilize support for policies and programs that expand access to education. Its work ensures that literacy remains a national priority, fostering a more informed, inclusive, and empowered society where individuals have the skills needed to thrive.
